Last week, Slough Foodbank was honoured to be invited to Windsor Castle for a national showcase celebrating the power and impact of volunteering across the UK. His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen, alongside the President of Germany and Ms Elke Büdenbender, welcomed volunteers from charities representing every corner of the country.

Gail Pinkerton-Field (Foodbank Manager), Heather Smith (Volunteer), and Rhiannon Singleton (Volunteer) proudly represented Slough Foodbank, supported by Area Manager Christine Bamigbola from Trussell. Together, they created a display highlighting the many ways food banks serve their communities with dignity, warmth and compassion — from offering a listening ear over a cup of tea, to providing Christmas hampers and culturally appropriate Halal food.

Gail reflected:

“The volunteer reception at Windsor Castle was nothing short of extraordinary. Standing alongside volunteers from across the country, our team welcomed so graciously by Their Majesties, the King and Queen, was both uplifting and deeply inspiring. It was a beautiful reminder of the power of kindness, service, and community – and a moment Slough Foodbank was proud to be a part of.”

Christine shared how proud she was of the Slough delegation, noting their teamwork, creativity, and heartfelt passion for the community.

“Gail, Heather and Rhiannon shone brightly. They embodied the strength and commitment of all our volunteers across the network and left a lasting impression of encouragement and admiration.”

The event formed part of the Shaping the Future with Volunteering initiative, delivered in partnership with The Big Help Out, Eden Project Communities, and Trussell. It recognised the extraordinary contribution of over 40,000 food bank volunteers across the UK, including the 130 who serve Slough every week.

This extraordinary day at Windsor Castle was a celebration not of organisations, but of people — volunteers who show up with kindness, compassion and determination, ensuring that no one in crisis feels alone.

Slough Foodbank is proud to stand among them.
